Have a small space kitchen and it's causing you trouble? These five small space kitchen organizing hacks are here to help. Create more storage, tidy up the kitchen, and make cooking simpler!

Recently, my family moved across the country from the Southern California High Desert to Northern Michigan’s lush landscape. The change has been quite the adventure and we are loving our new home, but it doesn’t come without a new set of challenges. My home in California had a large kitchen with tons of cabinet space. My kitchen here in my new-to-me 1920’s home is considerably smaller with much less cabinet space. As the mother of a blended family of seven, this has proven to be my biggest challenge in my new home. Luckily, I’m known to family and friends as an organization queen, so this challenge has been fun for me. Puzzling together how to organize things in my new kitchen was fun once I came up with some simple small space kitchen organizing hacks.

Utilize Above the Fridge for Storage

The space above the fridge is typically pretty neglected, but in a smaller kitchen, ignoring any extra space is a luxury not afforded. However, I’m also not a fan of a cluttered looking area either. I utilized the space by making it look decorative while also serving a functional purpose by using containers, a beautiful cake stand, and a bin (read on for the creative use I designated the bin for).

Use Decorative Bins to Store Spices

As an amateur home chef, my spice cabinet is one of my pride and joys. It’s regularly stocked and used daily. When I saw my new meager-sized spice cabinet, I knew I’d need to come up with a better solution. I purchased a shallow decorative metal bin and used it to store the spices that didn’t fit into the cabinet. It looks great and allows me to keep my spice collection in tact. Thankfully, I’m tall so reaching to grab these from the top of my fridge is easy. If you’re vertically challenged, be sure to tuck a folding step stool to the side of your fridge for easy access.

Use Pretty Containers to Store Miscellaneous Items

I keep my family’s daily vitamins in the kitchen for easy access to take during meals. Between the seven of us, we have quite a collection of vitamins. In my California home, I had one designated cabinet shelf for them, but in my Michigan home, there is zero extra space for these items. To ensure I can keep them in the kitchen for easy access, I purchased a set of tin containers and tucked away my family’s vitamins in them. Adult vitamins are in the larger one, and the kid’s vitamins are in the smaller ones.

Keep Things Organized

With a small kitchen, organization is key. There simply isn’t enough room for chaos. To keep things organized, I use large mason jars and containers from the dollar section at my favorite store. When I’m running low, I purchase what I need at the store, fill the containers when I unload my groceries, and toss the trash. It keeps the space clean and organized, allowing me to maximize the space I have.

Store Potatoes and Onions in the Closet

I know this sounds incredibly weird, but I have no place – and I mean no place – to store these dark-loving veggies. Storing them on the counter isn’t an option because the light stimulates too much growth before I’m ready to use them. Instead, I store them in a galvanized bucket in the nearby linen closet (which has also doubled as storage for my extra kitchen items like my blender, mixer, and toaster). This keeps them fresh for longer and in an environment they prefer.

My small kitchen has proven to be a challenge, but it’s home and I’ve actually come to prefer my small kitchen to my larger one back in California. It keeps things simple, minimized, and keeps me on top of organization while allowing me to enjoy cooking with easy access to my supplies and tools. If you’ve got any tips on how to best organize and keep a small kitchen, comment below and share your wisdom!

    1. Don’t store onions & potatoes together 2. Packaging should be recycled, not “tossed in the trash.”
