As the weather warms up, it’s time for more outdoor entertaining and what better way to celebrate than with a 5-ingredient healthier cocktail? This Fizzy Pineapple Kombucha Cocktail is the summer cocktail dreams are made of!
The buzz around the popular health nut’s dream elixir, Kombucha, isn’t going away anytime soon. In fact, it’s getting a little more buzzed as my pick for this summer’s new favorite cocktail mixer.
What Is Kombucha?
Kombucha, the drink that at first sip might seem like a batch of fruit tea gone funky, is actually an ancient concoction of tea fermented with yeast and bacteria. The product of this fizzy fermentation is a slightly tart, acidic beverage that is teaming with probiotics.
Translation: healthy gut bacteria plus a deliciously tangy tea.
A Powerful Summer Cocktail (or mocktail) Mixer!
Pouring up a glass of “booch” on the rocks is a treat in itself, but the bubbly-biotic health drink just begs to be mixed with a little booze. And there are no wrong combinations! Any fruity-flavored juice can be swapped out for a similar Kombucha brew without messing with flavor.
For a novice mixologist, start with a flavor of Kombucha that you would drink sans additives, then add your favorite liquor.
To craft this pina colada vodka boocha (what a mouthful!), I simply added the complementary flavors of pineapple Kombucha, coconut milk, and an ounce of vodka.
The sweet and tangy flavors are the perfect companion to chunks of fresh pineapple and a splash of coconut milk.
Aside from being a totally Instagramable cocktail, this tall drink of health is packed with B vitamins, minerals, and way less sugar than traditional juices or soda.
Tips For Choosing Kombucha:
To mix a proper Kombucha cocktail, you need the proper Kombucha.
Look for Kombucha Tea that has the fewest grams of sugar.
Check the nutrition label for the grams of added sugar. Some brands of Kombucha can contain as many as 10 grams or more of sugar per serving, which may be a health deal breaker for some, especially if you’re going for a healthier cocktail like this one!
Choose darker bottles over clear bottles.
The probiotics in Kombucha are sensitive to light and can be damaged if they go unprotected for too long. A darker bottle will protect those bacteria from being destroyed.
Steer clear of artificial flavors!
Artificial flavors or “natural flavors” are pretty ambiguous and not necessary in Kombucha. Grab the “booch” with the least ingredients, or at least the most recognizable ones.
With the growing number of Kombucha varieties out there, the cocktail mixing possibilities are endless! After you master the simple fruity flavors, get creative with bitters, herbs, and maybe even a craft Kombucha mocktail!
