If you’ve never used tahini for anything other than hummus, you’re in for a real treat with this Vegan Tahini Hot Chocolate recipe. Gluten and dairy free, this 10-minute recipe is the perfect party drink for the winter holidays!
If you’ve never tried tahini before except for in hummus, I’m about to open your eyes to a whole new world! We’re making a super easy and epic vegan tahini hot chocolate recipe! I love substituting tahini in recipes that would normally call for a nut butter, such as peanut butter. It lends a really great flavor that is unique to any recipe. It’s also a great nut-free alternative to using peanut butter or almond butter. Tahini is essentially a paste made from ground sesame seeds. It can be used for both savory and sweet recipes. In fact, I’ve used tahini as a binder in these tahini brown rice crisp treats, as a dressing in this curried chickpea and sweet potato quinoa power bowl, and now as a way to amp up the creaminess and flavor in this vegan tahini hot chocolate.
Hot chocolate is extremely easy to make at home, so it’s definitely a winter favorite in my house! If you’re not vegan, it’s just as easy to make this recipe with dairy too. You’ll be amazed at how simple it is to make your own hot chocolate at home – it only requires a few ingredients you most likely already have on hand and before long you’ll be sipping on this sweet, warm beverage. Trust me, you’ll never want to go the store-bought “packet and hot water” route again, especially when you can add unique flavors like tahini to the drink.
Vegan Tahini Hot Chocolate Recipe {GF, DF}
Using tahini in this recipe gives the hot chocolate a slightly savory flavor. It’s balanced so well by the chocolate though that it just works. I don’t like my hot chocolate overly sweet, but I felt that two tablespoons of maple syrup was the perfect amount of sweetener for this recipe. If you like something a bit sweeter, by all means add another tablespoon. I’d suggest starting with the recipe as written, and tasting to see if it’s sweet enough for your preferences.
Now, get in the kitchen and start adding tahini to your hot chocolate! The result is a hot chocolate that is rich, not overly sweet, a little nutty (because seedy doesn’t sound right), and super creamy. What more could you want in a cup of hot cocoa?
