Hawaiian Hot Chocolate Recipe
I have such fond memories of curling up with my family and friends around a fireplace, watching the fresh snow fall, and sipping on homemade hot chocolate while celebrating the dawn of a new year. My mom is a pro in the kitchen, so I always felt spoiled with her secret recipe for homemade cocoa. Little did I know, the adults were the ones really indulging! The blend of sweet cream liquor and hearty chocolate coats the mouth and warms the body from the inside out.
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup cocoa
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1/2 tsp cornstarch
- 1 shot Bailey's Irish Cream or Rumchata Cream Liquor
- 1 shot coconut rum
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients, except liquor, in saucepan on the stove on medium heat, whisking together until well combined.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring every other minute.
- When the mixture is boiling, reduce the heat, and whisk constantly until thickened.
- Remove from heat and portion equally into 8 oz mugs.
- Stir in shots and top with marshmallows or homemade whipped cream.
Notes
Home Chef Tip: If you'll be sharing the evening with your children or party guests under 21, feel free to leave out the liquor and let them enjoy a piping hot cup of hot chocolate with extra whipped cream and marshmallows!

Whether you will be hosting a party, curling up on the sofa with a loved one, or partying into the night with your kids, this Hawaiian Hot Chocolate is your New Year’s Eve staple.
If you want to make this in larger quantities for a hot chocolate bar at a party or celebration, the base recipe can easily be doubled (or tripled!) and kept warm in a slow cooker. Use a ladle for easy serving and offer several different types of liquor for adults and syrups for kids. Don’t forget the marshmallows, candy canes, and whipped cream for fun toppings!
