Five-Ingredient Cinnamon Applesauce

February 7, 2018 by Katie Foley Leave a Comment

Homemade Five-Ingredient Cinnamon Applesauce is likely the perfect comfort food, especially when it’s warmed up and served as a side dish, on top of ice cream, or with a nice piece of pie. Did you know you can make delicious applesauce at home with just five ingredients?

This homemade, five-ingredient cinnamon applesauce is one of those dishes that gives me all the feels. Growing up, my parents encouraged my sister and I to help in the kitchen, even if it wasn’t a major contribution. We were expected to get involved in the food preparation. This is what my sister and I always made for special occasions, and I still make it today!

The flavor of this applesauce honestly reminds me of the insides of a fresh apple pie, just with a different consistency. But, that’s not to say that you can’t make the texture more like your favorite dessert!

I personally like my applesauce a little bit chunky. This may be a tad unusual to the average applesauce fan, but trust me…it’s amazing. This is no jarred snack from the grocery store, this is the real deal! Many like to think that applesauce is a kid’s dish, but you can trust me when I say that if you put this in front of a group of adults, they’ll be licking their bowls like they are eight years old again.

I use a potato masher to blend my apples, but a hand mixer or immersion blender would work just fine. If you’re looking for a nice and smooth consistency, you can run your machine a bit longer. If you like more texture, blend a bit, check your consistency and blend some more until you’re satisfied.

Be as generous or conservative with the cinnamon as you’d like, but don’t start too heavily! There is no coming back once you mix in too much. This is largely because it is such a simple recipe, with just five ingredients. The fewer the ingredients, the harder it can be to mask any excess seasonings.

5-Ingredient Cinnamon Applesauce

5-Ingredient Cinnamon Applesauce

Ingredients

  • 6 large Honeycrisp apples
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar (or 1/4 cup brown, 1/4 cup white)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Core, peel, and cut the apples into quarters.
  2. Put all of your ingredients in a medium saucepan and toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. Blend with a hand mixer or immersion blender, or mash with a potato masher until it reaches your preferred consistency.
  6. Serve warm or cold.

Notes

Home Chef Tip: Mix some extra cinnamon and sugar 1:1 to sprinkle on top of the applesauce to spice it up a little bit! Or should I say sweeten?
