Easy and Delicious Gourmet Grilled Burger Recipe
Our favorite way to grill burgers is over coals, but if you have a gas grill that will work great as well. Make sure you double check your supply of all your cooking items (gas, coals, wood chips, etc.) before your shopping trip.
Ingredients
- High-Fat Content Burger Meat
- Burger Seasoning or Wood Chips
- Specialty Hamburger Buns
- BBQ Sauce
- Mayonnaise
- Eggs
- Guacamole
- Bacon
- Leafy Greens
Gather up your ingredients and get your grill blazing! If you’re using a charcoal grill, you’ll want to pile up the coals in the middles and light them up. While it’s burning down to perfectly glowing white coals, you can get the rest of your ingredients prepped.
A gourmet burger is nothing without, well, the burger! We love using the 80/20 pre-made patties. The high fat content is important for a juicy burger (lower fat content means it will get very dry and gravely textured as you grill it) and pre-made patties cook through perfectly and make life so easy! Also, purchasing pre-made makes it easy to pick up exactly how many burgers you need, whether it’s four or 20.
Now it’s time to season that meat. For flavors galore, play around with the burger seasonings in the spice aisle. One of our favorites is a pre-made pub burger spice mix that we layer on liberally, and that’s what we did this time. For a subtle, smoky kiss of flavor, skip the seasoning and use wood chips on top of the coals as you’re grilling instead. Hickory, pecan, and applewood are all amazing choices that each lend their own delicious flavors to the meat.
When the coals have cooked down, place the burgers over indirect heat (off to the side). Cook the burgers until well done–the juices should run out clear when you press down on them. We always pick one to also cut open in the middle to check. In the last minute or so while the burgers are on the grill, add the buns to toast them.
Once the burgers are resting nicely on a covered plate, it’s time to fry up your bacon and eggs. We use center cut bacon, cut in half. It creates crunchy, fun pieces that are the “just right” size for topping burgers. Check with everyone before frying up the eggs to get the right cook time for each person. I love mine over easy while my husband prefers his cooked through.
The last step is the fun one! Top your burger with all your favorite gourmet toppings! Pre-made guacamole in individual containers is easy and delicious and lets you pick different flavors like spicy, chunky, and original. We love baby spinach for the greens, but any variety of greens or lettuce that’s your favorite will work perfectly. Have extra time, company, or using this for a celebration? Adding extra options to stack on the burger like caramelized and fresh onion, mushrooms, lettuce, chips, and cheese take this basic gourmet recipe into a delicious and customized experience that rivals any burger joint!
