The next time you want to whip up a sweet treat try these five Natural Sweetener Sugar Substitutes for a healthier way to update your favorite recipes.

It is generally known that consuming refined sugars can cause certain health concerns. To be honest, sugar is a sneaky substance that hides in any number of unexpected foods such as prepared marinara sauce, ketchup, and sports drinks. It goes by names like high fructose corn syrup or dextrose. One way to regulate your sugar intake is to create simple recipes at home like this Homemade Healthy Marinara instead of using a store-bought sauce. Another is to use one of these five Natural Sweetener Sugar Substitutes that have better-for-you health benefits. Just remember ALL sweeteners should be consumed in moderation!

5 Natural Sweetener Sugar Substitutes

  1. Honey – Honey is a natural, unprocessed sweetener that is pretty tasty in a variety of recipes. With 17 grams carbohydrates per tablespoon, you could use it in a natural homemade energy drink. Honey is also beneficial in beauty products and as a cough suppressant.
  2. Agave – One benefit of agave nectar is that it is derived from a plant, making it vegan friendly. In addition it has a more neutral flavor making it versatile in cooking. One word of caution though, while agave is a natural sweetener, it is not lower in calories than processed sugar.
  3. Maple Syrup – Antioxidant-rich maple syrup is lower on the glycemic index than refined sugar, making it a favorable sugar substitute. It has been shown to help fight inflammatory diseases as well as improve digestion.
  4. Coconut Sugar – Coconut sugar can be a better alternative for diabetics because of its lower glycemic range, as well as having trace amounts of nutrients and minerals.
  5. Molasses – Molasses is a by-product of the process used to make refined sugar. Unlike refined sugar, though, molasses contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
