How to Keep Guacamole from Browning

We get it. Nothing is worse than making a big bowl of guacamole and then having leftovers that you know will turn brown. We’ve all been there. We’ve tried all the tricks, too! Leaving the pit in the guacamole, covering with lime juice, pressing plastic wrap over the top. But none of them work perfectly and we’d all but given up on enjoying fresh, leftover guacamole. That is, until now! This kitchen hack is the answer and it really does work to keep your guacamole from browning!

Tired of your guacamole turning brown shortly after you make it? We have the only kitchen hack you'll ever need to keep guacamole from browning ever again.

We have the ultimate hack to keep that guacamole green EVERY TIME! The trick here is to pour about 1/2 inch of water on top of your guacamole. I’m not a scientist so I can’t tell you exactly what goes on here, but essentially the water acts as a barrier between the guacamole and oxygen, which is what turns guacamole brown. When you’re ready to serve the guacamole, you pour off the water and give the guacamole a quick stir. That’s it!

We love using this hack for the holidays when prepping in advance is key for easy holiday appetizers. If you need some easy guacamole recipes that will “wow” the crowd, try this grilled avocado guacamole, apple guacamole, or this mango pomegranate guacamole. This hack even works with store-bought guacamole.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Your favorite guacamole recipe
  • Glass or food-safe plastic container with lid
  • Water

Directions:

Prepare your guacamole. Place guacamole in a glass or food-safe plastic container. Smooth with the back of a spoon so you have an even layer. Pour water on top of the guacamole so that you have about 1/2 an inch of water covering the guacamole. Cover with the lid. Place in the refrigerator to store. Right before you’re ready to serve, pour the water off of the guacamole. Stir with a spoon and serve. Admire that fresh, green guac and enjoy!
