Hot Buttered Rum is a blissful winter cocktail containing rum, butter, vanilla ice cream, and various spices. Spiced rum drinks will warm your heart during the holiday season.
Last winter my husband and I brought our daughter out for a car ride to check out the neighborhood Christmas lights. As we were cruising through town enjoying the festivities, my husband started craving a glass of Hot Buttered Rum. I had never tried one before, but he described it as one of his favorite winter drinks. We made a beeline for the grocery store after we were finished checking out the Christmas lights to buy some ingredients and headed home to enjoy this tasty warm beverage and relax together on the couch.
Hot Buttered Rum: A Classic Winter Cocktail
Hot Buttered Rum is a classic winter cocktail. It’s a mixed drink containing rum, butter, vanilla ice cream, and various spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Spiced rum drinks are especially popular during the holiday season. If you need a hot drink to warm your soul this winter, look no further than hot buttered rum. You could buy commercial hot buttered rum mix, but this fun winter drink is surprisingly easy to make. It can be made with or without alcohol if you are serving it to non-drinkers or the kids.
Try using spiced rum in this recipe for a nice, festive flavor and you can customize it even further by using specialty vanilla ice cream or other flavors of ice cream to suit your taste. Fresh cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of cloves enhance the warm, spicy flavor of the rum and sugar. Hot buttered rum tastes best if you top it with a dollop of whipped cream and sprinkle a little more cinnamon on top.

- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 pinch ground clove
- Boiling water
- Spiced Rum (optional)
- Whipped cream, optional for topping
Instructions
- Start the kettle and while you are waiting for the water to boil, blend all the ingredients except the ice cream in a bowl, then add the ice cream and continue mixing until it is smooth.
