Raise your hand if you love fried food!

To be honest, I don’t eat a lot of fried foods because I try to eat healthy and cook healthy for my little army. But it’s hard to avoid the tempting crispy, crunchy fare that is so easily accessible.

If you are searching for healthier versions of your favorite snacks, just know they are out there. I have many recipes on The Healthy Home Cook that modify your favorite fried foods into lighter, better versions of themselves: Oven Baked Crispy Okra, Baked Pickle Chips, and Oven Roasted Crunchy Cauliflower to name a few.

Today, I have a recipe that your guests would swear was a traditional fried appetizer or snack, but made it a much healthier way. My Crispy Baked Buffalo Tofu is the perfect addition to your cooking game plan. It’s a great alternative to classic fried buffalo chicken wings.

How to make crispy baked tofu:

Start by draining and cutting 1 package of extra firm tofu. I cut mine into cubes, but feel free to cut into strips or however you choose. Try to let the tofu dry out as long as possible. This will help the bites become less soggy and more crispy in the oven.

In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of gluten free panko breadcrumbs, 3 tablespoons cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of paprika. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup olive oil and 1/4 cup of plant milk. I used almond milk.

Dip each cube of tofu into the oil mixture then into the breadcrumbs. Place onto a prepared baking sheet. Bake at 425ºF for approximately 45-50 minutes.

Once you remove the tofu from the oven, toss them with a desired amount of buffalo sauce. I add a little bbq sauce as well, for a little extra flavor. Then serve immediately with your favorite vegan dressing/dip, in taco bowls, or in a salad!

Notes

Home Chef Tip: Try using a wire rack, placed over a baking sheet for this recipe. It helps the tofu to bake more evenly.
