When it comes to entertaining, there is nothing better than simple, hearty appetizers that are sure to be a hit. While making pizza dough from scratch is rather easy, the store-bought version is our choice for even easier Halloween appetizers. You can’t go wrong either way.
To make one pizza dough spider you will need 16 ounces of pizza dough which will be enough for the spider and about 10-12 extra breadsticks. The spider body makes for a dipping bowl, able to hold about 1/4 cup of dip. Make sure to keep extra dip on hand to refill the bowl because it will go fast!
Besides the marinara and guacamole dip, you could make an extra spooky garlicky bean and sage dip by using black beans. How cool would that look?
Tips to Make this Pizza Dough Spider Fool-Proof
Pizza Dough Spiders are addictive Halloween appetizers, yet simple to make. They are sure crowd pleasers and with these tips they are fool-proof to make.
- To ensure the legs don’t over-bake, keep the oven light on and keep a close eye on the spider. Once the legs brown, cover them with aluminum foil.
- Bake all the extra legs (breadsticks) on a separate baking sheet after you’ve baked the spider. That way they will bake uniformly and won’t burn.
- Use store-bought ingredients or make it all from scratch ahead of time for easy entertaining.
- Enjoy!
Ingredients
- 16 oz pizza dough
- 2 tbsp flour (optional)
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan or poppy seeds
- 1/4 - 1 cup Marinara or guacamole
- 1 large black olive for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Place pizza dough on a wooden board and form a ball. If the pizza dough is too sticky to handle, coat your hands in flour to prevent sticking. Quarter the dough.
- Use 1/4 of the dough to form a nice ball for the spider’s body. Halve another quarter and make another smaller ball out of one of those halves for the spider’s head. Cut the other half into fourths and gently roll each piece to form four legs. Make a light crescent shape to form a leg, tapered at the end.
- Halve the remaining two quarters of the dough and cut each into eight pieces. Gently roll each piece to form 16 legs. Make a light crescent shape to form a leg, tapered at the end.
- Pinch off a tiny piece of dough from one of the legs to make two fangs.
- On a lined baking sheet, assemble the spider using the big ball for the body, smaller ball for the head, eight legs, and fangs. Each body piece should barely touch as the dough will rise while baking and all pieces will join to each other.
- Brush the dough with egg wash and sprinkle with grated parmesan or poppy seeds.
- Bake at 375° F for 20-25 minutes or until the body is golden brown. To prevent the legs from burning, cover them will aluminum foil once they are golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool.
- Place all the extra legs on a separate baking sheet, brush with egg wash and sprinkle with the remaining cheese or poppy seeds. Bake at 375° F for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Once the spider is cool, use a sharp knife to carve out the body to make a bowl. Fill with about 1/4 cup marinara or guacamole. Keep the remaining dip handy to refill the bowl as needed.
- Garnish with a black olive cut as a spider.
Notes
To prevent breadsticks from burning, bake them separately from the spider body. Cover spider legs with aluminum foil once they are golden to prevent burning.
