How to Turn an Orange into a Candle
We love upcycling items in the kitchen that would otherwise be waste and that’s why we turn to this kitchen hack often. Here, you will learn how to easily turn an orange into a candle; no candle making equipment required. All you need is an orange, grapefruit, or lemon, and any type of oil. Simply hollow out the fruit that you were going to snack on anyway, use the rind as the candle holder, the middle stem as a wick, and the oil as the “wax”. Simple as that, you have a fragrant, decorative candle to enjoy while you’re in the kitchen cooking your favorite dish.
You will use a sharp knife to slice into the peel of the orange. Insert about a fourth of the way through. Run the knife around the middle of the orange. You are then going to peel the flesh away from the skin by inserting a finger and pressing out. Watch for a video from us at the end of the week. Keep pulling and then the flesh will all come out leaving the stem.
Next you’re going to fill the cavity with some sort of oil that you have in the kitchen. We are using olive oil for this DIY. Then you will simply light the wick. If the wick is real wet it may take a little longer, but it will light, and it will last for a few hours depending on how much oil you put in the orange cavity. Grapefruits will last much longer because they are so much larger. This is a great trick if the lights go out.
