Enjoy the fresh flavors of summer while you wind down after a busy day when you make this simple Blackberry Mint Vodka Splash Cocktail with fresh farmers market finds!
My husband and I have made it a habit to take a walk around our neighborhood after dinner. We’ll strap our little guy into his stroller, we’ll leash up the dog, and we’ll enjoy the sun going down as we make our way around the block. We typically go get the mail on these walks because the mailbox area is a good distance, but not too far, and next door, there’s the neighborhood clubhouse which provides a place to sit under a fan for a little bit if needed. (It’s definitely needed in these summer months.)
On these walks, we talk about our ideal house (we are house hunting now), what we want for our son as he gets older, vacations we can take, what the dog did that day that was funny or cute, and what our son is learning. It’s the time of our day when dinner is done and before Max goes to bed where we can get a little exercise in. These walks provide a nice break where we get to catch each other up on our days and also take turns walking backwards in front of the stroller so we can try to make Max laugh. It’s our family time and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
The other day, we decided to turn right instead of left when leaving our small street and, while we were walking on a sidewalk down a hill, we saw blackberry bushes. Lots and lots of wild blackberry bushes. We are definitely in the throes of summer so berry season is upon us. I remember when we went berry picking in Georgia a handful of years ago. There were so many rows of luscious, thick, juicy blackberries and raspberries that we just picked and picked for such a wonderfully long time.

To now spot wild berries almost directly behind my home is so exciting to me! There is this open field at the top of a small hill and the berries are everywhere. Of course, the season is kind of just beginning so there are many berries still in infancy, but we were able to pick some great ones for this Blackberry Mint Vodka Splash Cocktail.
These berries are paired with mint leaves that I picked from the edible garden where I work. I work for a university that has an edible campus initiative, which includes open garden beds that students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to pick from and enjoy. You’ll frequently see students hovering over the beds, wondering if they should try swiss chard or parsley or, maybe, some strawberries! During an afternoon lull, I took the opportunity to nab some mint. Blackberry and mint go so well together.
This Blackberry Mint Vodka Splash Cocktail screams summer to me!
